Just say NO to inflatables on your tower

A question we hear literally every single day, "is this tower okay to pull a tube with?" As a fellow water enthusiast I could say yes, but the truthful answer is no. Now, let me be a little more specific on that. We carry a lot of different towers and the towers are capable of pulling a tube, but it's not good for them. Let me tell you why.

Did you know that each rope has a breaking strength?
These strengths differ from rope to rope, but one thing that doesn't change: a tube rope is a lot stronger than a ski or wake rope. A couple examples are that a 2 person tube rope is a little over 2,000 pounds and this 4 person tube rope is over 4,000 pounds! That is a lot of weight to be transferring to the tower AND the hull of the boat!

A couple things we have noticed on some of the boats we have installed on is that even the ski eye on the back of the boat has a pull rating. Most are generally about 2,000 pounds. This area is to be used for all towables, including inflatables.

In some cases the you have a tower that is strong enough to pull inflatables. At this point the question becomes is the hull of you boat strong enough to take the excessive amount of force. If it is not you could see some spider cracking in the gel coat, hull or worse. Most manufacturers tell you not to pull a tube from the tower. There are so many factors in pulling a tube its hard to ensure you are not going to run into issues. I know its the boring thing to do but we recommend playing it safe and continue pulling inflatables from the back of the boat.

Wiring a Wakeboard Tower

Wiring a wakeboard tower for speakers or lights can seem daunting. Do you go with a wiring harness or run your own wires? Do you need a quick disconnect? Choosing to go with normal wire or a wiring harness is a choice you need to make.

If you are just wiring one thing running a normal wire is not a bad option and may be the most cost effective. However, if you are running wire for multiple things a wiring harness is generally the way to go. A great feature to have in a wiring harness is a quick connect/disconnect, especially if you are collapsing or removing your tower. Not to mention this provides a much cleaner look.

If you decide to go with a wiring harness we have a few options listed below that available on out website.

Tower with Big Air 4 pin Wiring Harness
Most towers do not have an entrance or exit hole for your wiring, so your going to have to drill one. Before you do this step I recommend determining what size hole you are going to need. If you are using a wiring harness most manufacturers tell you what size hole to drill. If you choose to run your own wiring I recommend determining how many wires you will be using and then choosing a drill bit that is a little larger that the wire would be around. This allows the wire to slide in fairly easy.

Once you have made the decisions above its fairly simple. You will determine which side of the boat your head unit/ power source is on. In most cases you will want to run your wiring to this side. Decide where you want your speakers/light bar ect. to mount and drill your entrance hole.

Now in my opinion it is easiest to run the wire through the tower as you are assembling it. This can allow you to fish it thought each piece with ease. If you have your tower installed already you can normally run a pull string with a nut on the ends through the tower. This allows you to pull your wire through with ease. (Note with some towers you may have to jump a connection to continue running your wire.)  Then you mount the quick connect/disconnect if you have it. Connect the wire to your speakers/lights ect. and to the head unit/power source.

If you have any questions you can always contact us  and the tower manufacturer may have tip and tricks for their tower.

Pylon Vs. Tower

You may have noticed a Pylon was the original way to get your rope higher, later came towers. Which one is better? Which one is more beneficial? This is definitely a tough question to answer as both options have their pros and cons.

Pylons came out first. Some are made into the boat and others are aftermarket or extended and have cables that run from the pylon around the bow of the boat to hold it in place when under a load. These lines can get in the way especially if you have a crowd with you or an open bow boat. When you store an aftermarket pylon you have to remove if from the base and remove the cables. This generally leaves the base in the floor and personally prefer the floor to be clear. However, this allows it not to be permanent.

If you have a pylon you may notice an uncomfortable amount of flex when pulling a larger person especially when they edge out. Some people say this is because all of the force of that weight is applied to one place and the flex can be reduced with a tower because you have the weight dispersed over 4 mount locations.

Towers are a little more expensive than pylons. A tower allows you keep your seating room and there are no cables to run to the bow. You can mount board racks, speakers and lights on it. Plus with most towers you can run your wiring through the tubing. Now some towers are not very tall so if you are above average height you may hit your head especially if you have hanging accessories. On the bright side there are some manufacturers like Big Air and Vulcan that make their towers about 5 feet tall. This means with an average gunnel (2ft) your at about 7 feet, so most people don't have to worry about hitting their head.

To be honest a lot of this argument has to do with personal preference. Some people say "if it ain't broke don't fix it" and prefer the slightly less expensive and less permanent pylon. While others prefer the more permanent and clean approach of a tower. Below is a list of forums that have discussed this topic. Keep in mind the forums are a little dated so the prices are a little off.

Want To See A Tower On Your Boat?

Big Air is one of our most popular manufacturers that we carry. They have been in business for nearly 20 years! In our experiences with them they have been very easy to deal with. They are very serious about their customer service. They are a Christian based company and with these values in mind they try to keep their customers first and their prices affordable, which allows us to offer great pricing to you!

Big Air has out done themselves. They have released a feature on their website that allows you to see their towers on your boat. They call it the Tower Visualizer. This is so nice! It definitely helps you know what a tower will look like on your boat. This could also help you decide between towers if it is down to the aesthetics.

The way it works is, you can upload an image of your boat (or select a boat similar to yours if they have one) adjust the image size to fit the length of the boat. Then choose a tower you would like to see. You can even print or save the image if you want to show your spouse or friend.

The Tower Visualizer is definitely worth a look if you are struggling to decide on a tower, just want to see a tower on your boat or trying to talk you spouse into a tower. It has definitely helped some of our customers. If you have questions about a tower just contact us.

How to Choose a Wakeboard

Looking for a board? Don't know what to buy or how to pick? First you need to decide what style, shape, and length is right for you.

Below is a rough chart. However, each manufacturer has their own length recommendations. Please go by the manufacturer recommendations.
Rider Weight (lbs)             Wakeboard Length (cm)
 Under 100                            130 or Under
90 - 150                                 130 - 134
130 - 180                               135 - 139
170 - 250                               140 - 144
       200 - 275+                           144 or Greater

Construction: Some high end boards are made of wood covered in fiberglass. However, most boards are made of high density foam covered with fiberglass. The amount of fiberglass determines the amount of the flex a board has. Thus, the less thick the fiberglass is on a board the more flexible a board is. Flex in a board is good for beginners, especially in choppy water. The flex of the board helps adapt to the rough choppy water. More advanced boards are more stiff. This allow them to get more "pop" off the wake.
A flex board is compression molded. This allows the board to be stiff in the middle and flex at the ends. Some manufacturers of these board recommend this type of board for sliders and rails.

Shape: There are a ton of different styles and combinations of styles. Choosing a style has a lot to do with what kind of rider you are. A wide board allow you to get more "pop" off the wake but not carve well. More Narrow boards allow you to carve better but you won't get the same "pop". The tip and tail of a board have a lot to do with the way the board releases off of the water. A board with a more rounded tail and tip will release off the water slower. While a square one is more snappy.

Rocker:
Continuous: A Continuous Rocker has a smooth arch. This is normally found on beginner boards. You also get a smooth and consistent release off the wake and when cutting into the wake. Due to the curvature of the board it has more contact with the water. This allow smoother transition and a softer landing.
3 Stage: A 3 Stage Rocker has 3 areas, a flat center and (2) curved edges. This board style normally for more advanced riders. This shape allows your board to stay on top of the water a little more, which in turn provides less drag and a more explosive "pop" off the wake as well allow you to keep speed.
Hybrid: A Hybrid Rocker combines the best of both worlds. You get a fast and consistent board.

Fins: There are different types of fins, such as deep or shallow, fat or thin, removable or molded. Deeper fins are generally for beginners.

The above explanations of each feature should help you decide what you want out of a board.

How important is front to back stance when buying a wakeboard tower?

Sometimes its really hard to know what is important when buying a tower. We want to provide information to help aid you in your purchase.

Skylon FST
Front to back stance is one of those things that can be a big deal down the road. Narrow stance towers can cause a lot of stress in a small area. This stress can cause issues, such as your gel coat cracking. If you want a tower with a narrow stance you need to reinforce the area. Make sure your hull is as thick as the manufacturer recommends. Keep in mind some manufacturers recommend a certain hull thickness and do not provide a bolt for much thicker than that. I personally would be really upset to find I reinforced too much and the bolt wouldn't go through.

The Skylon FST is a great tower with a narrow stance. As long as you make sure you have enough reinforcement you shouldn't have any problems with this tower.

Big Air Predator
The Big Air Predator Tower is a good example of a tower with a wide stance. Just make sure your hull is to the manufactures recommended thickness and you shouldn't have any issues.

Some manufacturers try to keep the front to back stance wide to prevent issues down the road, like gel coat cracking. A wider stance allows the stressed area to be spread out.

Lets just be honest here..... Stance can be a big part of the tower appeal and design. If you don't like, or are worried about the stance, ask questions. Figure out what the manufacturer recommends before purchasing.

Just keep this little factor in mind when purchasing a tower.

Big Air Fusion: Product Review

Big Air is one of our most popular manufacturers that we carry. They have been in business for nearly 20 years! In our experiences with them they have been very easy to deal with. They are very serious about their customer service. They are a Christian based company and with these values in mind they try to keep their customers first and their prices affordable, which allows us to offer great pricing to you!

Big Air Fusion mount with Quick Release Knob

Want a stainless steel tower but don't want to have to drill through the tower? Because drilling through stainless steel can be difficult (in case you didn't know).......Well the Big Air Fusion Tower is the answer. This does not eliminate the Fusions universal nature. It will still fit most boats 58"-103"wide and you you can still mount it on the top or side gunnel. Worried about stress cracking your fiberglass? The Fusion has a unique swivel joint attachments built into the base plate, this system keeps the stress and flex in the tower, not your hull.

This tower also has a built in bung for thr Big Air Razor Series Racks. This eliminates the need for a clamp, this allows you to bolt the rack plate directly on the black piece shown in the photo to the left .   In my opinion this makes the tower look a little cleaner.

Are you tall? No problem the Fusion stands about 5 feet tall! With a 2 foot gunnel that is 7 feet of clearance!! There is also gusseting in the corners that make this tower extremely rigid.  Need to collapse the tower often? The included stainless steel quick release knobs make collapsing quick and easy.Did I mention this tower is made in the USA? This is surely a USA quality product. Below is a video of  Loren from Big Air explaining and demonstrating the installation process.  He is very clear and show you some neat installation tips

Overall, the Fusion is definitely a durable tower ahead of its time. You cant go wrong when making this tower an addition to your boat.  You also get a company that backs their products. Don't forget the 5 year limited warranty. However, I seriously doubt you will need it.

 So ahead of it's time!July 11, 2016
Reviewer: Chris K.
Let me start of by saying that this tower is exceptional! The instructions could have used a little help, but honestly, I couldn't think of a better way to put what I was needing so... if I can't help it, I can't say much about it. These things can be hard to put into words. I called up Wake Essentials though and Shane was great to help me out. Simple phone conversation letting me know I was on the right track and that was all the confidence I needed to get it finished. This tower is so ahead of it's time with the "no drilling system" and it is ROCK SOLID! A stainless tower is definitely the way to go and I could only find them from Big Air, I just happened to find a better price through Wake Essentials, thanks again guys! I am so pleased with this purchase and with the production of the tower.

How To Reinforce Your Hull With Fiberglass

Is the hull of you boat less than 3/8" thick? If so you will need to reinforce the hull of your boat before installing your tower. This is a very important step.If your hull is not thick enough, the stress from a tower can cause damage to your fiberglass over time.  In the video below, Shane from Wake Essentials shows you how to reinforce your hull using fiberglass.

They are very serious about their customer service. They are a Christian based company and with these values in mind they try to keep their customers first and their prices affordable, which allows us to offer great pricing to you!

Polished Aluminium Big Air Predator Tower
The Big Air Predator Tower was new to their lineup in 2015. This is defiantly not your cookie cutter tower. Your boat will surely stand out with the gusseted Z bar design. This is a great tower if you want to stand out. It is available in three finishes, listed below.

  • Polished Aluminium
  • Polished Anodized
  • Black Powder Coat

The Predator will fit a wide range of boats. It will fit most boats 78"-103" wide. All of the mounting hardware and backing plates are included. This means you don't need to purchase separate items to be able to install you tower.

It also stands about 5 feet tall from the mounting points. This allows the tower to accommodate most biminis. It is also navigation light capable. It is probably not a bad ideas to go ahead and get yourself a navigation light as most places require you to have a light on the tallest point of your boat. If you've installed a tower, that will be the tallest point. Oh did I mention it comes with a 5 year limited warranty? Because is does.

Overall: You are looking at a tower that is anything but cookie cutter. It is stylish and durable. The best of both worlds. You also get a company that backs their products. Don't forget the 5 year limited warranty. However, I seriously doubt you will need it.

The Tower Tamer  is included with the Big Air Haus Tower. The Tower Tamer insures the Haus doesn't sway with all that added heigth. Worried about warranty? Big Air has a 5 year limited warranty.

Big Air Beast Tower in brushed finish
Big Air Beast Tower in brushed finish
Lets talk about the Big Air Beast Tower. Big Air hit it right on the nose when they named this tower. The Beast was tested beyond 2,000 pounds. In case you are unaware, this is way beyond normal standard for any manufacturer we have ever heard of. This is a universal tower that is made of stainless steel. Guess what else?? It's MADE IN THE USA!! The Big Air Beast Tower fits most boats 68"- 103" wide. As will almost all of Big Air's towers, this is not a short tower. It stands about 5 feet tall from the mounting points. Need to store your boat in a garage or confined space? No worries, the Beast is collapsible to about 12"-14" above gunnel height.

The only negative comment we have heard is in regards to the tensions bars. While I don't have this issue, they may be an issue if you are tall or trying to accommodate and existing bimini top. On that same note, if you are tall you are probably used to ducking under things. Keep in mind the tension bars give this tower its extra strength.

The finish options are listed below.
  • Brushed Finish
  • Black Powder Coat
  • Custom Powder Coat Color

All around this tower is a BEAST!! Need something super strong? This is the strongest choice we have seen. If you have any questions feel free to contact us or Big Air.

Vulcan Vector Tower :Product Review

Vulcan Wake provide's good quality at an amazingly low price. Vulcan Wake is a long standing China based company that was not featured in the US until 2014.

Polished Aluminium Vulcan Vector Tower
Polished Aluminium
Vulcan Vector Tower
The Vulcan Vector Tower has a bottom bar that was designed to follow the windshield line of most boats. This add a little something different to this tower. Some towers that have this style with the bottom bar have to be completely straight up and down, completely level, and mounted in the exact same spot on both sides for the tower to go together properly. When it comes to the Vector those issues are not relevant and it is definitely not that complicated. Yes, some boat areas for installation may have the bottom bar mounts in the same place on both sides but they can also be tilted in if you like it better that way.

There is a lot of adjustment in this tower. The width is even adjustable too, it will fit 72"-103" wide.  It stands about 5 feet tall. Need to fit under a bridge or garage and worried your boat will be to tall with an additional 5 feet? Problem solved! The Vector is collapsible to near windshield height.

The Vector is available in 2 finishes listed below

  • Polished Aluminium
  • Black Powder Coat
It is also a double bar tower, which means there are two bars at the top of the tower. Vulcan says you can pull 1-2 adult riders with this tower.

This tower also comes with a 5 year manufacturers warranty. If you have any issues with workmanship they will take care of it.

Overall this is a great tower. It is strong, stylish, durable and reasonably priced. What else do you really need?

They are very serious about their customer service. They are a Christian based company and with these values in mind they try to keep their customers first and their prices affordable, which allows us to offer great pricing to you!

One of the most popular towers we carry is the Big Air Cuda Tower, for good reason. The Cuda tower is an extremely rigid tower. In Big Air's instructions they explain how to preload the tower, this is where a lot of your rigidity comes from. This tower is SOLID! Want to pull two riders at a time? You can
do it with this tower, NO PROBLEM!

Polished Aluminium Big Air Cuda Tower

Want to change it up and mount it sweeping to rear, you can! You won't loose any strength.
Don't want to clamp a rack onto the tubing of your tower? The Cuda has a built in adapter on each side for the Razor Series racks, keeping the towers sleek lines from being interrupted with a bulky clamp.

This tower is available in three finishes listed below.

  • Polished Anodized - (a protective coating over a polished aluminium tower, looks similar to a satin finish)
  • Black Powder Coat - (durable gloss black coating)

Standing about 5 feet tall this is not a small tower, you could probably use the extra hand. The video will give you an idea of what your going to be doing, as well as give you helpful tips and tricks.

If you are going to install speakers on your tower you will need to run wiring, there is a link below on running wiring in the Cuda tower that may also be helpful.

*Update: Big Air has notified us that their installation instructions have been updated due to some conflicting items between their install video and written instructions.

Tower looks great on the boat and seems like it will be very sturdy. The quality is what I expected and don't have any issues or concerns. Will probably purchase another tower like this when I get another boat.

This is the best tower on the market.  It's rigid and stiff as nails and need I say great looking on my boat. I watched their YouTube install video and installed it myself.

I was nervous purchasing this tower and installing it myself, but I found Big Air's install video on YouTube and watching it gave me the steps and confidence I needed to finish this project. It showed up in just a couple days, and with the assistance of a couple buddies, we had it built, wired, and installed in roughly 4 hours. Amazing tower. Very happy with my purchase.

These wakeboard racks have a stylish but durable design. They come in a brushed anodized finish, which is great in harsh elements such as salt water. A RWA (Roswell Wake Air) medallion comes with all of the hardware. The medallion is there to cover the center connection bolts, this keeps these racks looking sleek. Some of the tines (or forks) are over molded, which is just a coating. This coating not only protects you board but the tines as well.

All in all these are great racks, with a great name behind them. However, their prices are middle of the road. If you have the money to spend this would be a great choice.
